The four common ways to ship a card
- Plain envelope with stamps. A card in a penny sleeve and top loader, taped between cardboard, in a regular envelope. Cheapest, but untracked, so if it's lost the loss is yours.
- eBay Standard Envelope. A tracked letter service eBay offers for low-value cards and other flat items. It only works through eBay labels, and eBay sets which listings qualify.
- Bubble mailer with Ground Advantage. The standard for cards over about $20: tracked, padded and still a few dollars.
- Box with Priority Mail. The most protection, for slabs, stacks of cards and high-value sales.
Why a top loader costs more to mail
A stiff envelope can't go through USPS letter sorting machines, so USPS adds a nonmachinable surcharge to it. A card in only a penny sleeve avoids the surcharge but has almost no protection. Most sellers pay the extra for the top loader.

Questions
What's the cheapest way to ship a trading card?
A plain envelope with a stamp, about $1.50 to $2 with a top loader, supplies and the surcharge included. Use it only for low-value cards and buyers who agree to untracked shipping.
Do I need tracking to sell on eBay?
For anything that matters, yes. If a buyer says a card never arrived, tracking that shows delivery is what protects you in a not-received claim.
How should I ship a graded card?
In a bubble mailer at minimum, wrapped so the slab can't shift, and in a box for valuable slabs. Slabs are too thick for letter mail.
