How to ship trading cards
The right way to ship a card depends on what it's worth. Here's how to pack each one and which shipping method to pick, from a $2 base card to a slab.
How to pack a single card
- Slide the card into a penny sleeve, top first.
- Put the sleeved card in a top loader. A small strip of painter's tape over the opening keeps it from sliding out; avoid regular tape, which is hard to remove.
- Put the top loader in a team bag, or sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard, so it can't bend in the mail.
Pick the method by value
| Card value | Method | Tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Under $20 | Plain envelope or eBay Standard Envelope | Standard Envelope only |
| $20 to $250 | Bubble mailer with Ground Advantage | Yes |
| $250 and up | Bubble mailer or box, with insurance | Yes, add signature for big sales |
| Graded slabs | Bubble mailer at minimum, box for valuable slabs | Yes |
Plain envelope
A card in a top loader in a regular envelope mails as a letter, starting at a $0.82 stamp under USPS prices effective July 12, 2026. Because a top loader makes the envelope rigid, USPS adds a nonmachinable surcharge, $0.49 as of January 2026. It's cheap but untracked, so if a buyer says it never arrived you can't prove otherwise. Use it only for low-value cards.
eBay Standard Envelope
eBay's tracked letter service for low-value cards and other flat items. It's bought through eBay labels, has weight and size limits, and eBay sets which listings qualify. For cards under about $20 it gives you tracking at close to letter cost.
Bubble mailer with tracking
A padded mailer sent by USPS Ground Advantage is the standard for most card sales. Online labels cost less than the counter price, which started at $7.90 in July 2026. Put the packed card in the middle of the mailer so it can't slide to a corner.
Box
For slabs, stacks of cards and high-value sales, use a small box with padding on every side. Wrap slabs so they can't knock against each other. eBay's seller protection requires signature confirmation on orders of $750 or more.
Work out the real cost
Supplies add up: sleeves, top loaders, bags, mailers and tape. The card shipping calculator adds postage and supplies for each method so you can price shipping in your listings correctly.
Questions
Can I mail a card in a top loader with a regular stamp?
You need extra postage. A top loader makes the letter rigid, so USPS charges the nonmachinable surcharge on top of the stamp.
Do I need to insure a card?
For cards worth more than you'd be comfortable losing, yes. Tracking proves delivery; insurance covers loss or damage in transit.
